Hunting:  Located next Yellow River State Forest. Allamakee County has approx. 20,000 acres of public hunting ground.  Iowa is known for its world class trophy deer. Allamakee County is #1 in the State of Iowa for world class animals.  Northeast Iowa, especially Allamakee County with its large track of hard Oak timber provides a perfect habitat for large Turkey populations.

Fishing:  Harpers Ferry, Iowa, nestled between the bluffs and Mississippi River provides fantastic Mississippi River and backwater fishing hole secrets. Allamakee County has some of the finest stocked and native trout streams in the entire Midwest.

Yellow River Forest:  Located in Allamakee County in northeast Iowa. It also contains 6 miles of trout stream stocked from April through October and a marsh from which bass and pan fish may be taken. Approx. 9,000 acres of the largest State Forest in the State of Iowa in one parcel. A multiple use State Forest; hunting, fishing, biking, kayaking, cross country sking, equestrian and site seeing.

Effigy Mounds:  American Indian culture developed over 1,000 years ago placing thousands of earthen mounds across the landscape of what (today) includes parts of Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois.  Over 200 mounds are preserved intact within the Monument; 31 are effigies in the shape of bears and birds – commemorating the passing of loved ones and the sacred beliefs of these ancient peoples.

Pikes Peak State Park:  Offers excellent picnic opportunities. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely outdoor meal and, at the same time, enjoy some of the finest views in the upper midwest from the overlooks and trail viewing platforms.

Birding:  Harpers Ferry sits on the Mississippi River Flyway. Pool 9 is noted for its Diver ducks, Canvas Backs and Sculp (bluebills), but we also have fantastic early and late season Wood Duck, Mallard and Teal along with a thriving Canadian Goose population.
